If there’s one area where DC is kicking absolute ass, it’s their animation department. Oh Young Justice, I miss you. But, I’m not just talking about the TV shows. Their direct-to-video animated features have been pretty awesome for a while. I was first introduced to DCU Original Movies through Batman: Gotham Knight, the 6-episode anthology that served as a narrative bridge between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Not the best, per se, but it was enough to get me interested. And the DC Showcase Animated Shorts… loved some of those.
Well, before I get too sycophantic – today, they dropped the trailer to their new upcoming release: Son of Batman.
Intense, eh? Yes, Batman’s actual son, Damian Wayne – his son with Talia Al Ghul. Ah, it just makes me wish The Dark Knight Rises didn’t happen the way it did. Son of Batman is a story adapted from Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert’s Batman run back in 2006.
Excites I am. After all, I’ve been following the little dude (Damian Wayne) ever since I was an actual little dude, in 1987, when he showed up as a mystery baby in the last panel of Batman: Son of the Demon.
Plus, Morena Baccarin as Talia? Yes. Also on board the voice cast: Giancarlo Esposito as Ra’s al Ghul and Jason O’Mara as Bats himself. Oddly enough, Kevin Conroy (whom I like to refer to as Batman’), is also credited on the project. (EDIT: After publishing, the IMDb entry was changed, removing Kevin Conroy from the cast list.) I’m not really sure what’s going on there, but I’m guessing they’re going to use flashback clips from a previous DCU movie, perhaps. Conjecture.
I can’t seem to find a concrete release date, but most sites have it set for 1st quarter 2014.
