Where to begin with this new show.

Well, I guess we could begin with the new full trailer to the series.

So what does a new show like this entail in terms of the other Marvel Movies? What could we expect? What kind of show could it be? What kind of show SHOULD it be?

The first thing to address is how ambitious this show is. Continuing the trend of Marvel Studios unprecedented ideas, this show does in fact take place in the same shared movie universe that Iron Man, Captain America and Thor live.  How much will it tie into the films? Is the TV show considered to be part of Phase II of the Marvel Studios epic superhero plans (Phase I was all the films leading up to The Avengers. Phase II will be all the films leading up to The Avengers 2 encase you didn’t know. ) I’m still trying to wrap my head around the idea of the folks behind the show trying to coordinate the plans with the feature films.

BUT, that’s how Marvel COMICS does it month to month.  It can be done.

Actually, that’s one of the most exciting things about this show. Unlike the movies, this show can do the thing that superhero comics do so well, which is tell serialized stories. The problem with films is that we have only a little bit of time to follow the lives of these characters, where as a TV show, you can get endless hours of development and grow, and build up to big climaxes that only a TV show could give.

Granted, this show isn’t about superheroes. Marvel fanboys probably wondered why this new show’s leads aren’t established S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that are already from the comics. My guess is that it will allow to give the show the upper advantage of creating new characters from scratch. To have no expectations on to how they should look or act.  No baggage. You will experience the characters for the first time, and also not be sure of their fates. Any one one of them could live or die.

Meet Skye. Based on her humor, will she be this show's Xander?

It makes sense to me. In a way, it takes those background Agents that you see in so many shots from the comics and films and gives them the spotlight. If successful, they will be characters you will like, and thus adding to the Marvel universe cannon.

Of course, not every character in this show is brand new…

CoulsonSHield

So how do YOU think they will address his return? Every rumor has been discussed, from him faking his death under Nick Fury’s order to him be a robot. Whatever the answer is, I do hope it will be one that will not cheapen his death from The Avengers, and that will be a much harder answer then just him saying…”I was lying about being dead. I’m all good now.”  Hopefully it will be a very satisfying answer.

I’m still surprised by the growing Agent Coulson fanbase. Truthfully, I think Phil Coulson is still a blank canvas that can be worked on. We honestly know so little of him. We know that he’s got a bit of a dry wit. We know he admires Captain America. We know that he has very little tolerance for Tony Stark’s behavior. A lot of that information came from The Avengers film, and hey, look at that, the guy who wrote and directed that film is the one leading the charge on Coulson being the lead in this show. The show has the chance to make him more then that one recurring S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in the Marvel movies, they can make him a fully realized character. As a fan of the character myself, I am really looking forward to seeing what they will add to him.

The next bit of excitement comes from this man…

RichardsSHIELD

So, who is he playing? Rumors seem to be that he’s playing Luke Cage and or even Rage from New Warriors.  I’ll bet money he’s not Luke Cage, but if he is, this would be a great way to introduce him. Not saying Luke Cage can’t work on the big screen, but the idea of introducing his origin on TV makes sense to me. His origin doesn’t necessarily need to be a big budget movie (He’s a prisoner who got experimented with a super solider like serum and escaped prison. Became vigilante) , but to introduce him on a TV show, it will allow them to just jump right into Luke Cage’s own film without the need to drag out an origin film. The origin could be explain via flashbacks to the TV show. (This, of course is an example of what they could do. NOT actually what their doing…I think.)

Luke Cage or not, this also gives us a glimpse of what kind of show this is gonna be. Yeah, the vibe will be X-File-like (or Fringe-like) but this time out, they have the Marvel Universe to play with.

Could there be an episode set in the Savage Land? Would there be a case about strange experimenting that leads them into the High Evolutionary? Will they be tussling with the Taskmaser? They have the whole Marvel Universe for their choosing (to a point, depends on what rights that they didn’t sell to other studios.)

Some of the things I hope to see is the continuation of A.I.M. or Hydra. Those organizations can easily find a way back.  Maybe I could hold out hope and see A.I.M. wear some version of these outfits in the show…

As much fun as it will be to see what guest stars and easter eggs they could throw into the show, it’s more important that this show is it’s own thing. This show should work even if it’s NOT tied to the Marvel Universe.

I would have concerns with that if it wasn’t for the fact that Joss Whedon and his crew is behind this.

Now, to be fair, Joss Whedon won’t have NEARLY has much input in this show as he did with his previous shows, since he will be busy more or less show-running THE REST OF THE MARVEL MOVIE’S. He does leave his very talented brother and sister-in-law Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen and Angel alumni Jeffery Bell as the show runners, so I think it’s in good hands.

If  Whedon and his gang announced that they were going to make a spy show, I would have been excited to see it regardless. The fact that it’s tied to the Marvel Universe, that’s just icing on the cake.

How about you guys? Who do you hope to see pop up from the comics? Which of the new characters from the trailer caught your attention? Me, personally, I’m looking forward to see badass 49 year old (and still good looking) Ming-Na Wen kick ass every week. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  will air Tuesday night at 8:00pm on ABC.

Ming-Na Wen!!

  1. All the “what if’s” in my head man!!!!!! What I really want to happen is Coulson to head the “Avengers Initiative” but that probably wouldn’t even be a thought till much later down the road (might be a reason as to why the character we see in the trailer might be Luke Cage), but a reason as to why they are going around looking for these hero’s. Fury pissed off his higher ups when he let the group disperse at the end of “The Avengers” and because they interfered with the nuking of new york against direct orders, now they want control of a team. There is also soo much to the Civil War story line that it could all be played out in Agents of SHIELD (as you stated about developing characters in TV Shows vs Movies). Speed Balls ordeal can play out and the hero registration can begin (this would also mean Penance! <3 eeeeeeeeeeeek!) but i'm more excited in my brain than what could ever possibly go down on the show… Penance <3 ….
