Back in 2007, this teaser came out….
At the time we had no idea what the movie ended being…not even a friggin title. While for many JJ Abram’s mystery box approach to marketing his films is annoying, I still give credit for how exciting and enticing the marketing for Cloverfield was. It didn’t really matter how you felt about the final movie…they made an ad campaign that made you feel like you NEEDED to see this movie, just so you know what the hell it was. They don’t get away with marketing like that anymore, not in the age of the internet. It was impressive, and it sometimes made me wonder if they could ever pulled that off again…..
….well damn it JJ Abrams….it looks like he did.
For anyone who went to see the new Michael Bay film this weekend, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, they saw a teaser for a movie that NONE of them knew about.
That’s right…a JJ Abrams sneaked in ANOTHER Cloverfield film!
Kind of.
Here’s a quote that JJ Abrams said about 10 Cloverfield Lane.
““The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”
The projected went into production back in 2014 under the title Valencia. The films director is Dan Trachtenberg, who gained a ton of attention directing a Portal fan film. Check out the film below. I remember being pretty impressed with it myself and I can see why they signed him up to make this film since they share some similar concepts. (i.e. people trapped in a secluded bunker)
It seems like the goal for the film is to just explore the world of Cloverfield, and not do a direct sequel. I’m kinda down for that.
Cloverfield is far from my favorite film, but I found it entertaining enough. Thanks to the ad campaign I did always think they did such a good job of world building . The films official website even kept adding more clues and laying down more questions weeks after the film came out. It seemed like it was big waste if they had no plans do anything further in this world, especially since it seems like they had more ideas.
Even with out the Cloverfield connection, this is actually a really intriguing trailer, with a cast that I am digging. Getting John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead is never a bad thing and I saw John Gallagher Jr in the excellent Short Term 12, in which he was fantastic in. I’m intrigued with the movie…and I honestly want to know more.
Damn it JJ….you are really one sneaky son of a gun.
