Oh my goodness!  Is it my birthday?  Because someone just gave me a great big present with a bow on top.  The Deadpool trailer premiered and Holy Shit!  I haven’t stopped watching it.  In fact, I have it playing on a loop on my computer right now and I check in after every sentence.  But I suppose this is supposed to be a review of the trailer and it’s not much of a review if I spend the time repeating “Holy Shit Balls!  This thing is Ama—Zing!”  So let’s get down to the nitty gritty, what makes this trailer amazing?

Allow me to preface this with a brief explanation.  I have been waiting for a Deadpool movie since I first read Deadpool in high school.  Yeah, that was a decade ago because I am a patient Mother Fucker.  I was there when they first dropped the idea of Ryan Reynolds playing Deadpool in the pages of “Cable vs. Deadpool”.  So when “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” announced he’d been cast as Wade Wilson I essentially peed my adult pampers.  My memory of that traumatic movie has since been redacted.  But hope came once more when it was announced that Robert Rodriguez was attached to direct a faithful adaptation of the Merc with the Mouth.  And then he wasn’t.  And then he was?  And then he most certainly wasn’t.  The term “Development Hell” doesn’t accurately describe the ups and downs of this movie.  Finally the movie was doomed to forever be a blank IMDB entry.  Then, in 2014, there was a little panel at SDCC where they showed some test footage.  It was unmistakably Deadpool and it was incredible.  It still holds up too, go and watch it because it was so good they lifted 90% of it for the new trailer.

This new trailer is great, I can’t stress that enough.  It has violence in abundance, a key aspect to comic book Deadpool.  And that violence is just spectacle.  In an age where superheroes have to struggle valiantly to survive in fights, Deadpool flips through the air and does somersaults as he takes out waves of gun wielding baddies.  In the freeway scene, the same one they originally did in the first trailer, Deadpool drops into the sunroof of an SUV and has a punch up in the confines of the leather interior.  But the fun doesn’t stop at violence, there’s also crude humor.  I can’t tell you how much of Deadpool’s comic book humor is penis based and the trailer at least seems to have captured that ratio.  Totally not a bad thing, I was laughing my ass off throughout the trailer.  Ryan Reynolds perfectly captures the timing and tone of Deadpool—the tone having a lot to do with the penis, again not a bad thing.  But if you’re thinking this trailer was all about showcasing the male package, you clearly were not watching the same trailer as me because there was a lot of strippers in the last third, something Wade Wilson is rather fond of… though it does beg the question, will this depiction of Deadpool be bisexual as is comic book cannon?  I suppose that is something we will have to wait and see along with a few other interesting nuggets.

One of the most prominent things about the trailer was the song “X Gon Give it to Ya” by DMX.  A very catchy jingle, well edited to, but also raises a few questions.  In comic book continuity, Deadpool is adamant that he is a member of the X-Men, a claim vigorously disputed by the rest of the X-Men.  This may be looking into things a bit too much but is the song implying a thicker tie to the X-Men cinematic continuity.  After all, we do see both Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, both established in X-Men continuity.  And there are rumors floating around of a cameo appearance by another more prominent Canadian hero—Hint!  His name starts with a “W” and rhymes with “Olverine”.  It would be fins of course if his connection to other mutants was tenuous, that is how he started his comic book career.  The least we can say though is that Colossus’s appearance in the trailer is fantastic, a marked improvement over his appearances in the actual X-Men movies.

            Now that I’ve gushed, let’s talk about what we didn’t see in the trailer.  The very first thing that comes to mind is breaking the fourth wall.  Yeah, he made that crack about the super suit not being green but after that, bupkis.  After the test footage where he talks directly to the viewer and even in the leaked footage from SDCC where he looks out and tells them to cue the music (yeah I watched the leak trailer like a hundred times but I’ll probably watch the actual trailer even more), I felt miffed the fourth wall was left intact.  This will definitely change in the movie but I feel this is a great trait of Deadpool’s to showcase.  Missed opportunity really.  Another thing that I didn’t see and I’m not sure if I will is the yellow boxes.  Yes, it is a strange mechanic to try and adapt to the screen but hopefully the movie found a way to portray Wade’s insanity—because he is super crazy.  One thing I do feel was really lacking was even a whiff of the plot.  I have no idea if the guys he’s gunning down are baby eating grandma punchers or patriotic, wholesome soldiers trying to apprehend a crazed gunman.  But you know what?  I don’t really need to know that.  All I need to know is that there’s guns, explosions, and a lot of mouthing off.

All in all I would say this trailer is a huge success.  Did it show the plot of the movie?  Not really, which is refreshing considering the last Terminator movie pretty much ruined the linchpin plot twist in the trailer.  I think the best thing about this trailer is that it shows the dire need for this movie to be rated R.  Did you watch the red band trailer?  Did you watch the other one?  The edits make it seem silly—and not in a good way.  Kind of seems like the airplane edit of Shaun of the Dead.  The trailer pretty much accomplishes what it set out to do: Announce the character, drum up interest, and look bad ass doing it.
