Back in the day (or at least in the ’90s) the Fourth of July weekend was a pretty big summer movie day. This year, it doesn’t really feel like that’s the case any more. In all honesty, after Jurassic World, I almost think the rest of the summer is gonna be kinda quiet. This week we have two dramatic romances in which the posters have pretty much the same composition. We also have two sequels this week. One film that was a surprise hit when the first film came out and now the sequel might have some excitement for…the other one is the new Terminator film.
Ok, ok, let’s see what’s the new films for this week; July 1st, 2015.
What’s it about? Political activist Jimmy Gralton is deported from Ireland during the country’s ‘Red Scare’ of the 1930s.
My thoughts? Interesting looking historical film with that oh so enticing Irish Charm. I honestly don’t know much about the cast, but they seem to be pretty solid in this film. Let’s see if it ends up being any good.
What’s it about? A modern day train hopper fighting to become a successful musician, and a single mom battling to maintain custody of her daughter, defy their circumstances by coming together in a relationship that may change each others lives forever.
My thoughts?…..did this trailer just explained the whole movie? It kinda felt like it did. Any ways, while I’m not the biggest Katherine Hiegl fan, she seems decent in this. I realized I have never seen Ben Barnes in ANYTHING. He seems interesting in this one, if not really that remarkable.
What’s it about? Three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, he and the remaining Kings of Tampa hit the road to Myrtle Beach to put on one last blow-out performance.
My thoughts? “You know…I’m actually kinda surprised on how much I ended up liking this movie.” That was generally the response I keep hearing concerning the film, Magic Mike. I kinda wasn’t surprised. Writer/director Steven Soderbergh is a talented filmmaker, and I figured he would make something at least entertaining with that film. The film ended up being a hit, so it almost comes at no shock that a sequel was underway.
I still haven’t seen Magic Mike, but I honestly have every intention of watching it soon. So I have no idea what’s going on with this sequel in terms of the events of the first one. Hopefully it doesn’t come down to a case of diminishing returns, and that there’s enough new stuff in this film to make it fun but not repetitive to the last movie.
Surprisingly, Soderbergh didn’t return to direct this film. Make his feature directing debut is Gregory Jacobs, who has been Soderberghs 1st assistant director in dozens of his films.
That doesn’t mean Soderbergh isn’t involved at all. In fact, he’s this films cinematographer AND the films editor which I find all kinds of interesting.
What’s it about? John Connor sends Kyle Reese back in time to protect Sarah Connor, but when he arrives in 1984, nothing is as he expected it to be.
My thoughts?…..I’m sorry…I just stopped caring. Two bad sequels and a TV show that I wasn’t really feeling just had me burnt out on this franchise. In the end, the Terminator’s story will always feel done to me. T2 is all I needed. It is a film series that ends perfectly with two films. The only thing I would considered to be the real sequel after T2 is the Terminator attraction that used to be at Universal Studios Hollywood (thought it’s still in the Florida theme park.)

That was actually directed by James Cameron and brought back the cast of Terminator 2. This new film? I’m just not liking idea of rewriting history to find a way to keep extending this series. I think that Jai Courtney and Jason Clarke are horribly miscast (thought I am digging Emilia Clarkes take on Sarah Connor). Like I said…I’m done. If you’re excited, let me know how it is. For me? I’ll just watch the first two again, it’s actually been a while.
Sidenote: Kinda funny that Game of Thrones stars Emila Clark AND Lena Headey have both played the part of Sarah Connor.
