We have movies that are bringing the chocolate (but not in the way that you think.) Mothers abandoning their children, an unnecessary remake of a classic 80’s movie #1245, and the director of The Incredibles newest live action film! So, let’s see what’s coming out this week: May 22, 2015.

What’s it about? Life for a struggling college student changes in an instant when he meets the owner of a male strip club who convinces him to give amateur night a whirl.

My thoughts? So, I kinda love how the trailer isn’t shying away that this film is clearly just ripping off Magic Mike. Even down to the tag line ,”Feel…the…MAGIC!” I will say that I like seeing Michael Jai White getting to showcase his range in a flick like this. When he’s not required to be a bad ass action hero, I forget how charming and likable he can be on film.

What’s it about? Residents of a retirement home build a machine for self-euthanasia in order to help their terminally ill friend, though they are faced with a series of dilemmas when rumors of the machine begin to spread.

My thoughts? What a crazy delight this looks to be! The premise is incredible, it’s got a great tone, I laughed quiet a bit while watching the trailer, and it looks to be visually well crafted. Time to seek this one out.

What’s it about? Aloft tells of a struggling mother who encounters the son she abandoned 20 years earlier.

My thoughts? I realized that I haven’t seen all these actors in a movie in a long time. That’s a solid trio of performers in this film. It’s got a strong visual look to it, and while the story doesn’t really seem like my cup of tea I can at least say that the acting will deliver.

 

What’s it about? A young girl is sent to the country for health reasons, where she meets an unlikely friend in the form of Marnie, a young girl with flowing blonde hair. As the friendship unravels it is possible that Marnie has closer ties to the protagonist than we might expect.

My thoughts? Studio Ghibli movies usually never fall short in the film department. Even if the movies end up not being as memorable as the films that Hayao Miyazaki himself directs, they are still lovely pieces of work that I think deserve a look.

What’s it about? A family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces must come together to rescue their youngest daughter after the apparitions take her captive.

My thoughts? I honestly keep forgetting that this is coming out. I’m just numb to the fact that they remade yet another classic film that didn’t need to be remade in the first place. I feel that James Wan’s Insidious had all what’s left to say in a film that feels like Poltergeist. Insidious felt like a good reboot/remake to Poltergeist with out actually remaking/rebooting Poltergeist. This film feels like a waste of a good cast and a waste of a director who was at one point pretty promising. And the fact that I’ve heard NO BUZZ on this remake, and it’s coming out this week is a real bad sign. This might not be a terrible movie…but I predict we’re gonna forget that it even existed by next year. But you know what? I haven’t seen the original in DECADES. It think it’s time for me to give that another viewing.

What’s it about? Bound by a shared destiny, a teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor embark on a mission to unearth the secrets of a place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory.

My thoughts? Director Brad Bird, much like Joss Whedon and Edgar Wright, has developed a loyal following. When every film you’ve made is either considered to be a beloved classic (Iron Giant and The Incredibles), or just a really good movie (Ratatouille and Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol) , you start gain a reputation thats hard to live down. So, it came to me as a bummer to see that the reviews for Tomorrowland are finally in and the reaction has not been great.

While no one is saying the film is unwatchable, the consensus with the critics is that this film is a mess, and I’m not gonna lie…part of me sort of saw that in the trailers.

When I heard of Bird making this movie, I got excited just purely on him making another live action film. When I heard he wanted to make a movie about the positivity of the future, that got me excited. The mystery behind the film got me excited.

But then the first trailer came out…and while I liked what I saw….something about it didn’t keep the flame of my excitement going. That’s kind of how I felt with every single trailer I saw with this film.

I liked what I saw visually….but I had no clue what the story was. Not knowing what the story was, or what the real hook of the film was gonna be besides the cool looking designs…I guess I needed more. Sure, I like the banter  between Clooney and Britt Robertson in the trailer and that gave me some hope for the film to be fun..but again, something was missing.

Hearing that the film is a narrative mess, it makes sense as to why the trailers seemed a bit lost on how to sell the movie. The visuals,action and George Clooney where the only things they could sell.

But, I’m an optimist. I’m still gonna see it this weekend, and perhaps with my expectation now much lowered, I’d be able to enjoy the film a bit more on a realistic level.
